Yes, by-and-large SCSI is the champ.  SCSI is outrun by SCSI-2, etc.
IEEE 1394/Firewire is essentially a souped-up SCSI though I haven't seen
any Firewire drives yet on the market.  And the adapter makes a difference.
Several years I got a very book from Adaptec covering the difference in
their SCSI adapters.  Recently I tried to get a new edition and got the
run-around. So I drove to their Longmont facility and was told that the
SCSI people should be contacted in San Jose.  Then I met a couple of Longmont
employees who claim to be working on SCSI.  Your best bet for updated info
doesn't seem to be their website (though it may have improved since the
last time I checked it] but rather finding an informed source in either 
Longmont or San Jose.
