Gahhh... I _hate_ that!  I figured out the problem.  

To reiterate, I was having trouble getting packets from a non-ppp machine
on LAN-A to route through a ppp machine and contact a machine on LAN-B.

Forwarding was working fine.  The problem was that while there was a route
_to_ the destination from the source machine, there was no route _from_
the destination machine to the source machine.  It knew not where to send
the echo replies.  I added the route back to the network and voila,
contact!
