Use Red Hat's cool utility 'netcfg'! It makes setting up IP aliases a
breeze. The config files are stored in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts,
and look like 'ifcfg-eth0:*'. Once you see how 'netcfg' creates them,
doing them by hand becomes a breeze.
