Did you happen to run a "file" command on it first or look at the
contents?  Or did you already say that it was an empty file and I
missed that part?

I've seen some mail clients obligingly save mail messages to any
filename the user types in, a frequent creator of files like
"-geordie" under the elm client, when someone meant to save it
to "=geordie", meaning the geordie mail folder.
