I just recently noticed that ghostscript can convert from postscript to pdf, by using DEVICE=pdfwrite. Although I haven't used this much yet, it looks good. A trouble with pdftex is that it does not understand pstricks, a very useful program (see a recent AMS notices). Don Monk
