[lug] 3Com 905c problem

Hello all,

First of all, I'm glad to be aboard the Linux list! I'm a relatively new
Linux user but I think I've got a sticky problem. I have a 3Com 905c
Ethernet adapter that just won't work under Linux, though it functions
normally under Windows 2000 so I know the hardware is fine. I'm running
kernel version 2.2.14 under RedHat 6.1. I had previously been using 2.2.12
until a friend suggest updating. Apparently someone else on this list has a
very similar setup and had success with the newer kernel. In any case,
neither kernel works with my device.

The driver I've been using is the 3x59x supplied with the distribution. Each
time I boot the system I get a [FAILED] entry under eth0. The board does
show up under /proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts with the correct hardware
settings if I manually load the driver (i.e. "modprobe 3c59x", "ifconfig
eth0 up").

I have also tried the drivers supplied by 3Com on their website (released
sometime in September of 99 I think, called 3c90x). They build properly into
object code, but they will not load. I get a device busy error even though
there is nothing listed under "lsmod".

I'm also using a Cisco 675 external router for DSL. I need Linux to use DHCP
to assign its network settings.

I appreciate any thought you all have to offer.

Thanks!
Doug Wendel
