[lug] USWest External DSL Modem

Here's how I set up static IP on my DSL connection/cisco 675 --

Put 675 in routing (not bridging) mode
Set 675 LAN side to have the gateway IP address supplied by USWest.net
Left the WAN side alone
Turned off DHCP on LAN side (don't remember what I did with WAN side, but
probably left it alone)

10.x.x.x (hopefully not too many x's) is a non-routable IP address. You
can use it on your LAN without any problems. However, anyone outside will
never be able to get to it. For example, if I tried to ping 10.0.0.1 it
would go nowhere because there are no routes to that IP address, hence the
name.

I hope that helps, because I'm not exactly sure of the set up described.
However, I have gotten static IP to work over DSL with a 675 so I know
it's possible, even for someone like me :-)
