** i don't think i know enough to name the
    how-to's i'd like to see newbie-ized.

rather, i'll list the things i'd like to
be able to do on linux (currently do 'em
all on windows nt) and leave it to wiser
heads to translate that to a list of how-to's:

    -- do a simple o/s install-and-configure off a cd
(downloading from a distro's website and
setting up that way is probably rather far
in the future for me; ditto for putting in
a new kernel or anything like that) and keep
        it running smoothly

-- ditto for upgrades of the o/s

-- do whatever i need to do to get the floppy
drive useable (to swap small pieces of s/w
        make small backups)

-- ditto for a tape drive (for the same stuff,
only on a larger scale), even if that requires
finding the driver somewhere on the web

    -- ditto for a printer

-- get netscape, run it, use it

-- install and support a dbms product i use
called d3 (pretty obscure, i know) from a
company called pick systems (also obscure,
        i know)

-- get 2 or 3 office suites, install 'em,
keep 'em running, learn to use 'em
