Just make sure that:

CONFIG_SMP

Is not set in your /usr/src/linux/.config

Or actually when you configure the kernel, before you compile it.  Course
I assume this is a relative new kernel like 2.2.*.  2.0.* you'l have to 
make sure it was commented out in the Makefile.
