while it may not be the easiest book in the world to *learn* from, i strongly recommend stroustrup's 3rd (or "special") edition. as for learning, lippman's c++ primer has a good reputation, but make sure that they've come out with a version that covers the STL thoroughly (e.g. one that has been revised in the last three years or so.) good luck, t.
