The main reason is that you need to have drivers, and drivers have bugs.
A router as a single purpse device is generally better tested.

No, you can use IPMASQ and IPCHAINS with the router, too.  You just
put the Linux box between the router and your LAN.  You can even do this
with a null ethernet cable and avoid a second hub (or  in my case, third hub
;-).
That way you let the router worry about bandwidth-on-demand and other
issues that tend to be buggy at best.
