Not 100% related, but many folks are using inexpensive Celeron systems
on the i810 chipset also, and there has been quite a bit of work in
getting those boards to be "happy" too.  The i810 has onboard video, but
it shares system memory, so the memory management issues require kernel
changes and the agpart module.

Have you seen RedHat's errata pages with the specific notes on using X
on the i810 motherboards?  There's a note near the bottom of the
document that states that other lockup conditions exist on the
i810-based chipset systems that have to do with needing to report the
absolutely correct amount of system RAM available at boot time.

It sure seems like you've done a lot of homework on your particular
issue, and perhaps others can benefit from the RedHat i810 stuff also.

I have an i810-based Celeron machine at the office that I use for
desktop work sometimes, and it's adequate ... especially for a $500 PC.  :)
