If that's the case, your network card is defective.  I've got plenty of
machines that don't have the network connected to them (machines with
dual cards, for example where only one is connected), and have never
seen that happen.

Does this person also recommend the same for your serial ports, USB,
Parallel, and audio/joystick ports?
