[lug] audio editing, sblive

I'm asking something similar to this question on the emu10k1 list, but
wanted to ask something a bit more explicit here.

I have a sblive, and in the past, have ignored the optical i/o. I
believe there is currently either an optical in or optical out, plus an
adapter to make the optical available for the other. I'm interested in
working with some sound editing, for purposes similar to the video
equivalent of texture editing. Does anyone here have any advice or
experience with sound editing programs? And does anyone here have any
experience with copying to or from a mini-disk player/recorder via the
optical lines?

I'm also curious about midi or other input for a cheap electronic
keyboard. What is available or required to run a keyboard to linux for
recording, mixing, and otherwise processing audio data?

Thanks,
