Another possibility are the OnStream drives.  The IDE 30G IDE internal
drive is currently $199, media (15G uncompressed) are $45.  Speed is 
an issue with this device.  Their fastest device currently has a 2MB/sec
native transfer rate with hardware compression, and it should work with
Linux with the scsi tape driver.

The main problem is finding backup software that's easy enough to use
so that you will actually make backups and be able to recover your data.
I'm beginning to think that with todays disk drives the right answer is
a versioning file system and mirroring.
