I have a dell Inspiron 5000. I like it quite a bit. 

It does have the suspend on lid close problem, which also annoyed me a
lot until I cut the sensor. No problems since then. ;) 

I have never tried ctrl-shift-alt-delete...couldn't you trap this in
linux and disgard it? Should be able to do something with it...

I really like the screen on mine (1400x1050). (they now make a
insirion 5000e with a 1600x1200 screen...cool!!!)

Battery life is pretty good (especially since you can put in two
batteries...7 hours...yea!)

suspend to disk works great 

sound works pretty well. 

After taking a while to get used to it, I really like the touchpad. 

anyhow, just another opinion.
