[lug] Trouble installing Debian

Have you tried to disable the system board IDE devices?
If you are not using them that would be the first thing I would try.
I think the motherboard controller uses IRQ 14 for the first controller
and IRQ 15 for the second one. You may have run out of interrupts (plug and
play fun), have a IRQ conflict, have a I/O port conflict, or a dma conflict. 
One of those could prevent Linux from detecting your controller.
