I fired it up it last week (on a NT 4 machine), and lo and behold, there
was a free X server (XFree86, no less) running on a Windows box. I didn't
do much beyond opening a couple of xterms (locally), though.

I'm not sure how it all works, but there was no configuration required to
get the X server running (I didn't have to pick a graphics card or
anything). I'm guessing the X server just runs on top of the Windows
display system (which I know nothing about).

The URL for the project is "http://www.cygwin.com/xfree/". I just followed
the "Installation How-to" to get it installed. The installation process
was painless for me (but there's a fair bit of downloading to do).

As I said, I did not do much with it, so I can't comment on how usable or
stable it is.
