Our box that was acting similarly turned out to be a driver issue.  Lots
of low-latency, high-bandwidth SMTP connections would cause it to just
lock up for 10 to 15 minutes.  It was a problem with the TLAN driver,
and after upgrading to the newest version it's not doing that any more.
Seems fairly different from what Rob is seeing.
