Sorry, that's not it.  The XVScan binaries were built with the older
version of GCC.  The problem is that RedHat 7.0 dropped the compatibility
libraries (which they kept in the 6.x series as a way of transitioning
people).

The older version of XVScan was built on a 5.2 system, which used
libc5 and 6.x included those as well as glibc6.  Chip was installing
software from a tar file built in what, 1996?
