oh, i didn't mean to sound quite that harsh on PCL.  i was mostly
comparing PCL4 and PCL5 with PostScript.  and the apple laserwriters
were based on PS, and they were out by 1985 or so.  if i really wanted
to have a flashback, tho, i'd look at HPGL or some of IBM monster
laser printers from back then.

also, various high-end solutions (linotronic etc) adopted PS quite a
while before commodity printers did.
