I'm sorry I was assuming a 24/7 network connection.  If you're just
needing a quick clock set (as suggested by others with rdate, which
would work fine for that too), the 'ntpdate' program is what you need...
it does a one-time synch.

I have my machines at home using the usual Debian scripts for ntpdate to
set their clocks on every boot and then stay synched to one "master"
server here at home with full-blown 'ntp'.

Regular ntp will be problematic on a dial-up link as if you're using
diald or something similar as it will constantly dial the link back up.
