That sounds a lot like the problem that I have with one of my home
machines.  My work-around, always escape out to a shell, "Ctrl-Alt-F1",
and run "shutdown -y -g0" manually.  If that doesn't work, you might
try asking about it on one of the xfree.org mailing lists.  I monitor
a couple for specific card postings but do notice a lot of laptop
problems being discussed.
