[lug] compiling kernel 2.4.0 (a note for RH7 users)

Yep, I bit the bullet (egged on by the cable modem at my disposal) and
downloaded 2.4.0.

It's working pretty well so far, though I'll give it a bit to shake
itself out.

FWIW - when compiling with Red Hat's setup (the "kgcc" bit), it didn't
work quite right. On reboot the computer locked up when it loaded the
sound module (es1371) - so much so that hitting the reset key wouldn't
help (I had to turn it off). After removing the reference to the sound
module and rebooting, it hung somewhere during the "linuxconf hooks"
process.

Sigh ...

Fortunately, there was another computer available to me which still had
RH 6.2 - and IT has the recommended compiler (egcs 1.1.2, aka gcc
2.91.66). I compiled the kernel and modules on _that_ computer, then
pulled it across the Internet (curse AT&T and the 128Kbit/second upload
limit!), then did the lilo thing.

And so far (fingers crossed), it's working nicely.
