you might have a substantial amount of luck with simple `dd',
depending on exactly how identical these machines are.

also, if the fs is well-supported by linux, you could use `tar' or
`cp' to work with the files at that level.  this won't handle, e.g.,
MBRs or such, but it might be enough for some tasks.
