[lug] strange gimp behavior?

I'm trying to use gimp to create some png images, and wondering if
anyone here has run into a rather bizarre and frustrating behavior,
where it claims to have saved changes, but they don't really save? No
matter what I do, I always have to make up a new name in order to save
changes. When I save it acts as though it has, but hasn't. When I do
"save as" and choose the original name, it asks if I want to overwrite,
I say yes, and it claims it has saved...but it hasn't. Is this normal
for gimp to require a new name for each save of changes? In order to
work with the original name, I have to exit gimp and delete the original
name file and copy the alternate name over. Very strange. This is on RH
6.2, gimp 1.0.4.
