[lug] Pine and /var/mail permissions

Well, another question...on pine this time:

Pine complains that the mail directory should have permissions 1777,
instead of 2774, which is the default (and recommended) for a debian
install. The current existing permissions on the /var/mail directory
(i.e. 2774) make a lot more sense than 1777 to me and the local linux
guru.

What are the group's thoughts on the subject? If 2774 is the
preferred permissions, how do I get pine to stop whining at me to
change them? If 1777 is the preferred permission, why is it better?

Sorry for the barrage of questions... a few I have been saving up for
several months, others (like this latest) occuared because I killed my
linux box and had to re-install the system. (Long story...don't ask)
