Abstract:

When is italics not italics? When it describes what something *is*,
rather than what it looks like-- something WYSIWYG word-processors can
rarely provide. I'll talk about the broad concepts, give basic
examples of everyday uses, and outline the tools available for using
the powerful text-processing systems like LaTeX, Lout, SGML, XML, and
the larger systems that use them. I'll also discuss the issues to
think about when choosing a system for a project, and how you can
avoid reinventing the wheel for every task.
