Depends whether you are in insert mode or not. If backspace doesn't work
correctly while in insert mode probably your terminal type is
misunderstood by the other end, and it might be useful to manually set
the TERM environment variable to vt100 or vt102 before starting the
remote session. Outside of insert mode (command mode), letter "h" goes
back, then "x" to delete the character.
