Charles, have you considered an upgrade to a more current sendmail release?

If that's not an option, have you entered sendmail verbose alias/include debug mode and tried to see how the alias gets expanded?

sendmail -d27.4 -v abuse at yourdomain.com

Or perhaps address test mode:

sendmail -bt
