I have an ATI Rage mobility on my dell laptop, and I have no problem, now.
XFree 3.3.6 works fine when you don't use frame buffer.
The 'stand by' mode also hangs the laptop when you close it while running X.

I upgraded to  XFree 4.0.2 and it seems have solved these two problems
