I'm guessing this is an Athelon system?

         I've found that Kernel 2.4.3 ( included with LM8.0 ) has a LOT of
issues with VIA chipsets and Athelon CPU's. You should down grade to 2.4.2
as those seem to work ok. (I'm running 2.4.2 till I'm convinced that 2.4.4
works fine)
