Uhhh ... OK - what kind of cable modem do you have? Does it have a network
port as well as a USB port?

FWIW, USB is _crappy_ for networking and (IMHO) should be used ONLY if there's
no other choice.

For example - with a 200 MHz processor on my I-opener I get about 4 Mbps (400
kbytes/second) on a 100 Mbps network with about 60% CPU utilization (using a
Linksys USB Ethernet adapter). That's using FTP, which I _think_ is the most
efficient protocol for file transfers.

Meanwhile, I just copied a file from one of my employer's Windows machines to
the web server (it has a 3Com NIC). The average throughput was 1.5
megabytes/second, with about 40% CPU utilization, and using Samba (which I'd
guess is not quite as efficient as FTP). Oh - and the web server is powered by
a 133 MHz Pentium.

If your cable modem DOES have a network port, and you can spare the change for
a network card (you can get a good 3Com card for $30 to $40, or other brands
for less), then I'd strongly suggest that you do so.

But if you don't want to go the network route, then it would be good to know
what brand of cable modem you're using (including chipset info if available).

As for DHCP - with @Home you typically tell your DHCP client your computer's
hostname (as assigned by @Home). With Red Hat (and, I presume, with KRUD) you
do this by including the line 'DHCP_HOSTNAME="whatever it is"' in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (or the appropriate ifcfg file for
the NIC in questions).

If you want an sample ifcfg file let me know - I can send you a working one
from a Linux box on @Home in Lakewood.
