[lug] Network Connection

I have Redhat 7 with a 3Com 509 NIC and a 3Com hub connected to a
Windows ME system which has the DSL. When I run Win NT the local
network works fine.
With Linux the message file from the boot up gives the " Network is
down" message as shown below. Everything was powered up when I started
Linux, the
system works when running NT so I do not suspect a bad connection. I
can not find
any information on the "ifup" refered to in the boot messages. I can
ping eth0 but the routing table was not set during bootup. When I
attempt to add to the routing table with route, I get the "network down"
message. Any idea what the problem is?
The "ifconfig eth0" command gives a reasonable response.
