I have a G400 in my workstation and feel your pain. You need to get a 
2.4 kernel. The g4x0 runs really slow in 3d under the 2.2 series 
kernels. Compiling the latest DRI snapshot wouldn't hurt either. Doing 
this vastly improved performance but it's still no where even close to 
an Nvidia setup.
