I have moved to using vorbis (.ogg files).

So I use cdparanoia or cdda2wav to rip the cd to wav's and then oggenc to
create the compressed file. Then I use xmms to listen to them. I am in
the slow process of moving all of my cd's to .ogg

The necessary rpm's are available on rh 7.1 install and are named

vorbis-devel-1.0beta4-3
vorbis-1.0beta4-3
libogg-1.0beta4-2
libogg-devel-1.0beta4-2

Before switching I used cdparanoia and bladeenc
