Another wonderfull tool is called gkrellm. Will monitro everything on 
the system: memory, swap, cpu, procs, disk-i/o, cpu temp (if supported 
by your hardware), network IO on multiple interfaces, etc. Also has 
plugins to allow it to control volume, xmms, various mail tools, seti, 
and many others. Has skins so it can match your current 
Enlightenemnt/sawmaill/gnome themes and takes up little desktop space.
