Turning its head is not a real option for MS in this case due to the
"defend it or lose it" nature of copyrights.

It would have been cool (and very good PR for MS) had they done
something like offering a site license for all the software in
question for a dollar.  That way the landsharks get to claim vigorous
defense of copyright and everyone else gets a warm fuzzy for MS.
Unfortunately (for MS) it is difficult to get Leviathan to operate in
ways it's not used to.
