I don't know if this will work with Debian, but under RedHat there is a program
"switchdesk" that, when running X, will pop up a little window that allows you to
choose among Gnome, KDE, and other window managers. You can type this on the
command line in a console window to start it. (On my RH 7.1 system, the actual
file is /usr/bin/switchdesk, and it has a man page).

Once you choose, you'll have to restart X to make the change. The program will
make the changes to your configuration files.

This assumes, of course, that you have installed KDE and Gnome <g>.
