[lug] LaTeX, margins, font size

I'm trying to create a cover letter with LaTeX documentclass letter. It
wraps over to require an extra page just for my signature. The margins
appear to be overly large, so I think if I either reduce the font size
very slightly, or if I make the left margin just a tiny bit smaller, it
should all fit without overflowing to the next page. Is there a way I
can do this, or does the letter documentclass determine this?
