That was close, but not exactly the problem.  I had to go into
/etc/sysconfig/ipchains and change the entry for port ranges 6000:6009 to
be ACCEPT instead of REJECT.  Once I did that then the old xhost
authentication mechanism stuff worked.  

Sheesh.  What a pain to figure that one out.  Unforutunately, isinglass
didn't let me override that option from the main config file.  It might
from a command line option or from the user config file, but I'm not that
familiar with how to use it (or even how to deal with ipchains).  

At least now the last hurdle to my upgrading my 6.x boxes to 7.1 and GNOME
are gone.  This ought to be a fun weekend.  *sigh*
