What is the permanent fix?  A firmware upgrade?  If so, can you borrow a Windows system to do the upgrade?

Are you in a position where your Linux box can handle firewalling on its own?  If so, have you considered running the Cisco in "bridged" mode?  That means the Cisco becomes effectively invisible to the network (it has no IP address). Then the only way to control the Cisco is via its serial port (we do this at work). That would obviate the need for a firmware upgrade.
