[lug] Getting X started - or, more properly, stopped

This doesn't work - since it changes video modes the text mode terminals 
disappear when it tries to start X. I've had this same problem at work with 
my setup there - although that's a different situation.

This I tried, but couldn't figure out how to get to a prompt from the 
rescue disk - it was probably as simple as the ^X thing, but I'd been 
looking at it too long, I think, and could no longer see the stuff in front 
of my face.
