[lug] Detect remote IP Address

HI,
I have a remote system that I am trying to check in with on a regular basis.
This system connects to the Internet on demand and receives a dynamically
assigned IP address.

My current way of identifying this system is to have an on site person initiate
an ssh connection to one of my systems that doesn't accept ssh and then I look
up the IP address in my firewall logs.

Now I would like to have a cron job that does the above for me once a day. But
I can't get ssh or telnet or ftp... to limit their connection attempts. I
experimented with ssh's ConnectionAttempts parameter with no luck.

I don't really want to send out an e-mail with the remote system's IP address to
myself every time the system becomes available.

Any ideas? I could send a few random IP packets to trip my firewall - but I
haven't ever had to do that and don't know - and if this approach would be
appropriate anyway. So I am open for suggestions.

Thanks,
Ferdinand
