[lug] Does xdmcp not bind to localhost somehow?

Yes, this is what I'm thinking. I don't know where it might be set, though
-- I've been looking. I was thinking it might use the Xaccess file that xdm
uses, but I've added *, 127.0.0.1, localhost and localhost.localdomain to it
and I get the same thing. Here's something interesting in my /var/gdm
directory:

This is the log and contents that it creates when I try localhost:
[root at munch gdm]# cat localhost.localdomain\:1.log
Xlib: connection to "localhost.localdomain:1.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

This is the log and contents that it creates when I try using it's hostname
(this was a successful connect):
[root at munch gdm]# cat munch.mlm.maxtor.com\:1.log
Gdk-ERROR **: X connection to munch.mlm.maxtor.com:1.0 broken (explicit kill
or
server shutdown).

Here's what I believe to be the important part of my Xaccess file:
# In all cases, xdm uses the first entry which matches the terminal;
# for IndirectQuery messages only entries with right hand sides can
# match, for Direct and Broadcast Query messages, only entries without
# right hand sides can match.
#

* #any host can get a login window

Are there any other security controls that I'm missing?
Jim

I am guessing that the authorization/security features would require you to
allow by specific names or ip's. Even if the hosts file says they are the
same, gdm/kdm and general X11 security could be interfering.
