Actually, there is no reason not to take the next step and really compile
a new kernel just to see how it works.  After all, the act of creating
(compiling) a new kernel doesn't actually install it.  That is a separate
step.  I tend to think that it would be instructive for everyone to
compile a kernel at least once.  If for no other reason than to demystify
the process.
