There are two different debug flags that one can set in the ppp cfg,
usually /etc/ppp/option:

debug and kdebug

Many distros default them to disabled.  Remove any comment char from the
left side of the line, or add the parms as desired / needed.  Enabling
them will direct information into your sys logs.
