[lug] SuSE 7.2 Error: "Unsupported partition table"

It seems to me that the msg may be somwhat misleading.  I've experienced
some similar problems when IDE - SCSI emulation (can't remember if it was
modules or integrated) were interfering and changing the device to
/dev/srN.  Although I wasn't seeing an "unsupported partition table"
error, attempts to mount were generating "no such device" or similar.
IOW, check the kernel configuration especially wrt which modules are 
being loaded.
