[lug] NIC Question

Color has NOTHING to do with it. I can make you a whole lot of cables (and
have seen lots of pre-packaged cables) in any color of the rainbow for
either crossover or straight-through Ethernet. Micro Center for example
carries both kinds in a variety of colors and lengths.

The only way to really tell is to know the color code and to look at the
individual wires in the RJ45's or to use a cable tester. Some cable
manufacturers make it difficult by making all the insulators white inside
the cable... I hate those. :-)

Or of course, by reading the label on the package on a pre-packaged cable.
:-)
