Hmm, that would make me nervous.  Are syslogd and klogd running? The
files are writiable and what not? Did you try restarting syslog and
klogd to see what happens, perhaps from a command line.  On my Debian
system the start up scripts are in /etc/init.d, sysklogd and klogd.
Don't remember what RedHat calls them, but probably similar.  

A system cracker would try to hide their tracks in the logs, a really
sloppy one might just delete 'em.  Is it a publicly accessible machine?
